Principal Structural Engineer

Overview

As Principal Structural Engineer in Bristol, you will lead structural design and delivery across varied projects, shaping technical concepts and solutions. You’ll act as a technical lead for clients and internal teams, driving quality and mentoring engineers while collaborating with multidisciplinary colleagues. The role emphasizes sustainable, low-carbon design and long-term client relationships. You’ll shape the Bristol I&IF team’s growth and contribute to Ramboll’s global engineering network, within a collaborative, supportive culture.

Responsibilities

• Lead the structural design and delivery of projects or major project elements
• Develop and align structural concepts, design philosophies and technical solutions
• Apply advanced engineering judgement to complex problems
• Take responsibility for the technical quality of your work and of others
• Serve as technical lead and trusted adviser to clients, supporting long-term relationships
• Inspire, coach and develop engineers and technicians within the Bristol team
• Collaborate with architects, contractors and other disciplines to deliver integrated solutions
• Promote innovative and sustainable design approaches, including low-carbon solutions and efficient material use
• Contribute to growth and development of the Bristol I&IF team

Key requirements

• Chartered with IStructE, ICE or international equivalent
• Extensive experience delivering technically challenging projects
• High level of technical competence across steel, concrete and/or timber
• Experience taking technical responsibility and leading design teams
• Excellent communication skills to explain complex principles to clients and stakeholders
• Ability to build strong client and collaborator relationships
• Willingness to share knowledge, coach others and develop the wider team
• Multidisciplinary mindset and interest in project drivers beyond engineering
• Passion for finding efficient and sustainable engineering solutions
• Experience in rail, aviation, energy, manufacturing, data centres or other critical infrastructure would be valuable but not required
