Senior Mechanical Engineer UK Switchgear Applications Engineering

Overview

In this role you own the mechanical engineering aspects of client purchase orders for MV/LV switchgear, guiding technical issues from concept to delivery. You will support Switchgear Applications Engineers on project-specific mechanical design work and contribute to standard designs and device libraries. You’ll liaise with clients and internal teams to ensure PO requirements are met, drive continuous improvement, and mentor technicians and apprentices. As a technical specialist, you help shape efficient, compliant switchgear solutions and collaborate across functions to meet customer needs.

Responsibilities

• Assist Switchgear Applications Engineers with mechanical designs for projects (transformer enclosures, arc-duct, bus-duct connections, electro-mechanical layouts, termination enclosures, non-standard cubicle/tier assemblies)
• Assist producing sub-supplier material requisitions linked to mechanical designs (e.g., power transformers, bus-duct)
• Create and maintain project-specific standard designs (LV compartment layouts, cubicle/tier design)
• Create and maintain standard device inserter libraries (protection relays, lamps, switches)
• Liaise with clients on technical PO matters with support from engineers and design & development
• Coordinate with internal departments to ensure PO requirements are met
• Maintain departmental performance to satisfy internal and external customers
• Train/coach Technicians and Apprentices; drive improvements and efficiencies
• Act as a technical specialist or advisor within the team
• Liaise with clients and contractors as required

Key requirements

• Skilled in AutoCAD and 3D Inventor
• Minimum of HNC/HND in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
• Computer literate with Microsoft Office (Word / Excel / Outlook)
• Relevant Industry experience (Typically 2-5 Years)
• Desirable: Degree in engineering with a mechanical bias; elementary Inventor iLogic; basic electrical understanding
• Desirable: experience within a Control Panel/Switchgear environment
