Mechanical Design & Test Engineer

Overview

In this role you will contribute to the development of space launch capabilities, delivering mechanical design and test expertise across subsystems. You will collaborate with electronics and other engineering disciplines to integrate and verify mechanical solutions in a multi-disciplinary environment. You will drive manufacturability and verification through comprehensive testing and design-for-excellence, shaping robust, flight-ready components. This position offers hands-on work in composites, propulsion, thermal management, and safety-critical systems within a leading space organisation.

Responsibilities

• Produce detailed 3D CAD models and 2D manufacturing drawings (SolidWorks, Autodesk)
• Lead internal design reviews and support technical discussions with suppliers and clients
• Collaborate with electronics engineers on subsystem integration including PCBs, sensors, and communications hardware
• Develop mechanical solutions across structures, propulsion, thermal management, and safety-critical systems
• Apply Design-for-Excellence (DfX) principles to improve manufacturability and serviceability
• Create and execute comprehensive test plans, including shock, vibration, thermal cycling, and IP compliance testing
• Analyse test data, drive design improvements, and contribute to prototype assembly and validation
• Communicate technical information clearly within a multi-disciplinary engineering team

Key requirements

• Degree in Aerospace, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent professional experience
• Proven track record in mechanical design for complex electro-mechanical products
• Strong proficiency in 3D CAD tools and Product Data Management (PDM) systems
• Hands-on experience with hardware verification and environmental testing
• Understanding of manufacturing processes such as CNC machining, injection moulding, sheet metal fabrication, and additive manufacturing
• Eligibility for UK security clearance (BPSS)
