Principal Mechanical Engineer – Water Sector

Overview

As Principal Mechanical Engineer, you will lead the mechanical design of water and wastewater projects within Stantec’s Newcastle or Leeds team, driving technical excellence from feasibility to construction. You will mentor developing engineers and shape client solutions while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. You’ll help grow our mechanical engineering capability and foster strong relationships with clients and supply chains. This role offers the chance to impact UK water infrastructure resilience and sustainability through innovative design and leadership.

Responsibilities

• Lead mechanical design across infrastructure and non-infrastructure water projects
• Produce and review calculations, specifications and design documents
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, project managers and clients to achieve project outcomes
• Provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior engineers
• Support design reviews, value engineering and continuous improvement initiatives
• Build relationships with clients, contractors and supply chain partners

Key requirements

• A degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline
• Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or working towards professional registration
• Strong experience delivering mechanical design within the water sector
• Experience leading technical delivery across multidisciplinary projects
• Excellent understanding of mechanical design, specifications and industry standards
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
• Experience mentoring and supporting developing engineers
