We’re looking for an experienced planning professional who is passionate about creating great places, enjoys leading people, and wants to make a meaningful impact on communities across Cherwell.
About the Role:
As Planning Policy Team Leader, you will lead a talented and dedicated team responsible for developing the planning policies that guide the future growth and development of the district.
You’ll work with colleagues, communities, elected Members, developers and a wide range of partners to help deliver sustainable development, support thriving communities and ensure that growth is well planned and evidence based.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading and motivating the Planning Policy Team to deliver a high-quality and customer-focused service.
- Managing the preparation, implementation and monitoring of the Local Plan and supporting planning policy documents.
- Ensuring planning policies are underpinned by robust evidence, national policy and local priorities.
- Building positive relationships with communities, Members, stakeholders and partner organisations through effective engagement and consultation.
- Providing professional planning policy advice to senior leaders, elected Members and external organisations.
- Managing complex projects and technical workstreams, including the commissioning and interpretation of evidence studies.
- Representing the Council at examinations, hearings, public inquiries and public meetings.
- Supporting service improvement, innovation, workforce development and succession planning.
About You:
We’re looking for someone who combines professional expertise with strong leadership and relationship-building skills.
You may already be leading a planning policy team, or you could be an experienced senior planning officer looking to take the next step in your career.
You will bring:
- Significant experience in planning policy and plan-making.
- A relevant planning qualification and membership of, or eligibility for membership of, the RTPI.
- Experience of leading, mentoring or managing teams and supporting others to succeed.
- Excellent communication and influencing skills, with the ability to explain complex issues clearly to a range of audiences.
- Strong project management, organisational and analytical skills.
- Political awareness and sound professional judgement.
- A passion for creating high-quality, sustainable places and achieving positive outcomes for communities.
