Overview

In this role you will design, build, and operate the production platform used by the Guardian’s multimedia teams to create and publish audio and video content across multiple offices. You will work on in-house applications, AWS infrastructure, and media management systems, collaborating with editors, engineers, and vendors to keep the platform reliable and scalable. You will upgrade architectures, diagnose issues, and help evolve the roadmap with stakeholders, while sharing knowledge and documenting technical work. This is a chance to shape multimedia workflows within a globally diverse newsroom and contribute to high-impact journalism.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, and release software that supports multimedia editorial requirements
  • Build and operate event-driven services and integrations on AWS
  • Maintain AWS infrastructure and automation for the platform (compute, storage, networking, media-processing)
  • Perform upgrades and ensure architectural stability across the stack
  • Diagnose and fix bugs with log-based troubleshooting and performance analysis
  • Collaborate with editorial users and the Multimedia Tech Product Manager to evolve the roadmap
  • Share knowledge, conduct peer reviews, and contribute to technical documentation

Key requirements

  • Proven experience as a software developer or systems engineer working with production systems
  • Strong programming ability in at least one modern language in the stack (Go, TypeScript, React, Electron)
  • Experience with REST API design and third-party integrations
  • Hands-on AWS experience (compute, storage, networking, IAM)
  • Experience designing event-driven, asynchronous systems on AWS (e.g. Lambda, SQS) and understanding distributed processing failure modes
  • Comfort working in Linux (CLI, systemd, networking, performance tuning, log troubleshooting)
  • Familiarity with Git, code reviews, and CI/CD pipelines
  • Practical security mindset (patching, dependency hygiene, least-privilege access)
