Permanent Way Engineer – Rail

Overview

In this P-Way Engineer role, you will support and deliver P-Way renewal plans and on-site execution for plain line and S+C track projects within a major UK rail infrastructure programme. You’ll apply survey and setting-out techniques, lead on-site delivery, and sometimes mentor others to ensure safe, timely delivery. You will work closely with project leads, clients, and stakeholders to resolve technical delivery issues and maintain safety. This is a hands-on, impact-driven position in a dynamic rail environment.

Responsibilities

• Support mid-week renewal planning and on-site delivery under the P-Way Delivery Lead
• Perform survey and setting-out for track renewals/installations
• Lead and mentor other team members when required
• Review track designs, site set-ups and ensure safe, compliant delivery
• Communicate effectively with project leads, clients and stakeholders
• Resolve technical delivery issues and maintain safety standards
• Liaise with project teams for progress updates and handback activities
• Support tamping and stressing activities where applicable

Key requirements

• Previous experience in a similar P-Way role
• Strong P-Way planning for renewals delivery on-site
• Competence in site setups, surveying, track design review
• Effective written and verbal communication
• Safety-aware with ability to overcome delivery issues
• Strong leadership, mentoring ability
• Valid PTS and Stressing levels (1, 2 and/or 3); Track Handback and Tamp­ing appreciation
