Overview

As a Mechanical Engineer in Exponent’s Mechanical Engineering Practice, you analyze failures across consumer products and large systems to uncover root causes. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams in a in-person London–Cambridge setting, and eventually a Cambridge lab environment, to apply design, material, and fracture mechanics principles. You’ll tackle diverse technical challenges using composites, experimental testing, and simulations to deliver clear, actionable insights for clients. This role offers high-impact work shaping safety, reliability, and innovation for technically complex products and processes.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct experimental testing, field inspections, engineering analysis and failure investigations
  • Develop test procedures and prepare client-ready reports
  • Tackle diverse technical problems applying mechanics and fracture mechanics principles
  • Demonstrate expertise in composite materials, experimental testing, and computational analyses
  • Interact with clients, managers, engineers, laboratory personnel, and non-technical staff

Key requirements

  • Ph.D. or equivalent advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or similar with focused work in composites, solid/experimental mechanics
  • Willingness to work in new technical areas
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Experience with manufacturing methods and analysis of fiber-reinforced composites
  • Laboratory testing experience or equivalent hands-on work
  • Experience performing finite element analysis is a plus
  • Desire for PE license and additional technical leadership
  • Ability to work in project teams and contribute, with potential for leadership
  • Ability to convey technical information to engineering, business, legal, and related audiences
