Main duties of the job

As a Band 3 Generic Support Worker (GSW) you will deliver therapist-prescribed rehabilitation programmes in community settings, helping people regain skills and confidence following illness or hospital admission.

  • Visit people in their own homes, care homes, and the intermediate care bed base across Croydon.
  • Follow individual care plans set by therapists, delivering:
    • Strengthening and balance exercises
    • Mobility practice (with or without walking aids)
    • Transfers (e.g., bed/chair/toilet) and stair practice
    • Functional rehabilitation including personal care and activities of daily living (ADLs) (e.g., washing, dressing, kitchen tasks)
  • Observe, evaluate, and report progress clearly to senior colleagues during handover and MDT meetings.
  • Seek guidance from qualified staff about the safe progression of programmes and goal achievement.
  • Recognise and respond appropriately to risk, including:
    • Identifying signs a person may be unwell or deteriorating
    • Escalating concerns promptly to senior clinicians
    • Maintaining safe practice during mobility, transfers, and exercise delivery
  • Keep up to date with mandatory/core skills training, attend team meetings and appraisals, and work in line with Trust policies.
  • Travel across the borough of Croydon is essential. You must hold a full UK driving licence and have access to your own vehicle for work purposes.

Working for our organisation

Croydon Health Services NHS Trust provides hospital and community services from a network of community and specialist clinics across the borough. Formed in 2010 through the integration of Croydon Community Health Services and Mayday Healthcare NHS Trust, we now have around 4,100 staff supporting a population of over 360,000 people.

Our main site, Croydon University Hospital, is one of the busiest in London. Alongside this, we are leading the shift towards more care delivered closer to home-through intermediate care, clinics, specialist centres, and people’s homes. Our district nursing teams, Allied Health Professionals and community matrons support people of all ages across Croydon.

Croydon is also one of the pioneer sites nationally for Neighbourhood working, making this a great time to join a Trust that’s actively building more joined-up, local care.

Like the rest of the NHS, we are responding to rising demand-but we’re doing it by backing our people, encouraging innovation, and investing in learning. We value education and training throughout your career, with access to core skills training and ongoing professional development.
