Structural Fire Engineering Lead

Overview

In this role you lead Structural Fire Engineering initiatives within Buro Happold, driving market awareness and project delivery for complex engagements. You guide a multidisciplinary team, shaping technical capability and fostering client relationships. You work at the UK Fire Engineering leadership level to align strategy, services, propositions, and people growth. You’ll influence design outcomes for ambitious buildings and represent the team in design meetings, delivering high-impact, life-safety-focused solutions.

Responsibilities

• Drive market awareness, pipeline, and business development for Structural Fire Engineering propositions
• Lead delivery on complex projects ensuring client satisfaction and ongoing relationships
• Inspire and develop the team, promoting growth and inclusive culture
• Contribute to UK Fire Engineering leadership in strategy, service, propositions, and people
• Own technical competence development within the Structural Fire Engineering team
• Collaborate with structural engineers to ensure life safety and optimize protection in buildings
• Inform design aspirations, functionality, and architectural form
• Represent Buro Happold at design team meetings internally and externally

Key requirements

• Master in Structural Engineering or Structural Fire Engineering
• Chartered engineer or nearing chartership
• Experience leading structural fire engineering teams in consultancy
• Experience managing structural fire engineering projects
• Experience in designing and assessing current and historic structures at ambient temperatures and in fire
• Experience performing fire and heat transfer assessments and structural modelling at elevated temperatures
• Experience using FEM packages like SAFIR, VULCAN or similar
• Experience writing and reviewing performance-based engineering reports
• Excellent consultancy, communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills
• Confident, proactive leadership in challenging situations
