Tunnel Systems Engineer

Overview

In this role you drive the technical direction for end-to-end tunnel systems design and advisory services within WSP’s Intelligent Infrastructure team. You’ll shape projects from concept through delivery, embedding safety and operations focus while collaborating with clients and multidisciplinary teams. You’ll influence the growth of tunnel systems capability and mentor emerging talent, contributing to landmark road, rail, utility, and multi-use tunnels. This is a chance to impact critical national infrastructure on a global scale.

Responsibilities

• Set technical direction for design, integration and end-to-end advisory services across electrical, mechanical, technology, fire life safety, communications and control systems for tunnels
• Shape projects from early concept stages with safety-by-design and operations-centered approaches
• Engage with a diverse client base (Local Authorities, National Highways, major airports, National Grid) to deliver tunnel systems solutions
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality, client-focused outcomes and support professional growth within the team
• Develop emerging talent and influence WSP’s tunnel systems capability

Key requirements

• Degree in a relevant engineering discipline (e.g., Mechanical, Electrical or Systems Engineering)
• Professional registration (CEng) preferred; mentoring and support for chartership available
• Proven capability in design, operation, delivery or assurance of complex engineering systems (electrical, mechanical, technology, fire life safety, communications or control)
• Tunnel-related experience welcome but not essential
• Excellent problem-solving and systems thinking mindset
• Collaborative, stakeholder-facing experience across internal and external teams
• Experience with applicable UK or international standards
