Overview
National Grid seeks an Asset Engineering Manager for HV switchgear to own the asset lifecycle strategy of the switchgear fleet. You will lead a team of asset specialists, shaping policies, specifications and intervention plans to maximise whole-life value and ensure safety, reliability and regulatory compliance. You will influence investment decisions, drive continuous improvement, and collaborate with engineering, operations, capital delivery and external partners. The role supports the transition to a cleaner, more resilient energy system and helps shape the network’s future. This is a leadership role with strategic scope across the asset portfolio.

Responsibilities
- Lead and develop a team of asset engineering specialists with a strong safety culture.
- Maintain and develop technical specifications, standards and policies for lifecycle management of switchgear assets.
- Define and deliver asset class strategies informing investment decisions, asset health assessments and long-term intervention plans.
- Oversee type registration activities for assets and manage required technical derogations.
- Lead the asset health review process with risk-based decision making across the fleet.
- Develop and sponsor efficient build and non-build solutions aligned with policy and asset management objectives.
- Support standardized engineering solutions for asset interventions across the network.
- Own asset data within your portfolio, drive data quality improvements and support digital asset management initiatives.
- Provide strategic technical guidance, financial oversight and risk management across the asset portfolio.
- Build effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including regulators and industry partners.
- Monitor emerging technologies, industry trends and best practices to improve asset performance and lifecycle management.
- Ensure the team has the capability and development opportunities required to deliver business objectives.
Key requirements
- Experience in asset engineering, asset management or asset strategy within the electricity sector.
- Strong knowledge of high-voltage network assets, including exposure to switchgear asset management, maintenance, health assessments or lifecycle planning.
- Experience in regulated utility environments (Transmission Owner/Operator, DNO or similar).
- Proven leadership experience with the ability to lead and inspire diverse teams.
- Understanding of asset lifecycle management principles, risk-based decision making and long-term investment planning.
- Technical credibility to challenge and guide subject matter experts while maintaining a strategic view over a broad portfolio.
- Experience influencing and engaging senior stakeholders across engineering, operations, regulation and delivery functions.
- Structured and detail-oriented approach to manage multiple priorities, risks and technical challenges.
- Knowledge of asset policy development, intervention planning and non-load related investment strategies.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills to build strong cross-business relationships.
