Overview

As Principal Highways Engineer, you will lead construction-phase activities on the HS2 MWCC project in the West Midlands, focusing on responding to live site queries and managing Stage 3 Road Safety Audit workflows. You will drive RSA3 processes, coordinate with HS2 and highway authorities, and maintain auditable documentation through the CDE. Your role centers on ensuring technical responses and actions are traceable, timely, and compliant, while liaising with contractors to progress changes and close-out actions. This position offers real impact in delivering critical highway infrastructure and safety milestones.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to RFIs and live site technical queries
  • Assess and respond to Site Field Change Requests (SFCRs) with cross-discipline coordination
  • Review material acceptance requests for standards compliance
  • Coordinate with contractor and stakeholders to agree actions and close-out queries
  • Lead the RSA3 process: draft RSA3 Brief, arrange site visit, process RSA report in CDE, draft Designer’s Response
  • Chair or attend meetings with HS2 and Highway Authority to agree Designer’s Response and actions
  • Manage technical documentation through the approved workflow and ensure complete, traceable, auditable records

Key requirements

  • Strong highways engineering background in major infrastructure
  • Proven construction phase support experience (RFIs, changes, contractor liaison)
  • Experience managing Road Safety Audits, ideally Stage 3, including Designer’s Responses
  • Confident stakeholder management with client bodies and highway authorities
  • Strong written communication and document/workflow discipline in a CDE environment
