Overview
In this role you will lead the technical design and delivery of highways and transportation schemes, working with project managers and multidisciplinary teams to ensure robust, compliant outcomes. You will mentor junior engineers, coordinate inputs across disciplines, and contribute to value engineering and bids. The position sits within Stantec’s Civil Infrastructure team serving a range of clients, from contractors to statutory authorities. You’ll operate in a collaborative, growth-oriented culture that values safety, quality, and practical, buildable designs.

Responsibilities
- Lead the design and delivery of highways and transportation schemes from feasibility to construction support
- Produce and review highways designs in accordance with DMRB, Manual for Streets, and local authority requirements
- Coordinate design inputs across highways elements ensuring robust, safe, buildable outputs
- Prepare and review technical reports, drawings, specifications, and calculations
- Provide technical input to multidisciplinary teams (drainage, structures, utilities, environment)
- Support Project Managers with programme planning, resourcing, and risk mitigation
- Assist with responding to technical queries during design development and construction phases
- Provide day-to-day technical guidance and informal mentoring to graduates and engineers
- Undertake technical reviews of junior engineers’ work and ensure standards compliance
- Contribute to value engineering and optioneering for safety, sustainability, and cost efficiency
- Support fee proposals, scopes of work, and technical inputs for bids/tenders
- Liaise with clients, authorities, and statutory consultees and represent highways discipline
- Identify and manage design risks, contribute to risk registers and design reviews
- Contribute to continuous improvement of highways design processes and guidance
- Work towards or hold professional accreditation (IEng or CEng with ICE or CIHT)
- Civils 3D, Infodrainage and utility coordination are advantageous
- Demonstrate technical judgement, attention to detail, and collaborative problem-solving
- Take ownership of allocated work packages delivering on quality, cost, and programme targets
- Promote health, safety and wellbeing within the project team
Key requirements
- Degree in civil engineering or similar
- Professional accreditation (IEng or CEng) with ICE or CIHT (desirable)
- Experience leading highways design and delivery across project stages
- Ability to coordinate multi-disciplinary inputs and stakeholder liaison
- Knowledge of DMRB and Manual for Streets standards
- Proficiency with Civils 3D and Infodrainage (advantageous)
- Strong technical judgement and problem-solving skills
