Special purpose Mechanical Design Engineer

Overview

In this role you will lead cross-functional design teams to deliver bespoke machine solutions. You will manage design projects from conception to validation, balancing timelines, budgets, and quality. You’ll design complex systems, run simulations, and drive optimisation while validating through prototyping and testing. You collaborate with internal and external partners to align efforts and apply manufacture-focused and value-engineering approaches. Responsibilities

• Lead cross-functional technical teams with mentorship in technical and interpersonal skills
• Plan, manage, and oversee design projects from conception to completion within deadlines and budgets
• Design detailed, complex systems with simulations and optimisation initiatives
• Perform feasibility studies, risk assessments, and oversee prototyping, testing, and validation
• Collaborate with internal departments and external partners for aligned design efforts
• Apply Design for Manufacture and Value Engineering to ensure smooth transfer to production

Key requirements

• HNC/HND in Mechanical Engineering (or related technical field)
• Proven experience in bespoke machine design and successful project delivery
• Strong leadership and team management capabilities
• Proficiency in SolidWorks (concepts, layouts, detailing, dimensions) to ISO standards
• Methodical and innovative problem-solver with strong communication and organisational skills
