HV Design Lead

Overview

In this role you lead HV design activities for substations, focusing on either Primary design or Protection and Control. You will coordinate multidisciplinary design work and drive technical delivery across projects, ensuring safety, quality and regulatory compliance. As a technical interface with clients and contractors, you help grow the in-house HV design capability while guiding bids and early-stage technical discussions. This is a critical leadership position shaping high‑voltage engineering delivery in a dynamic power distribution context.

Responsibilities

• Lead HV electrical design activities for substations (Primary or Protection and Control).
• Produce, review, and coordinate calculations, layouts, schematics, reports and schedules; ensure buildable, safe, compliant designs.
• Coordinate wider electrical design scope and manage interfaces between disciplines; support mobilisation.
• Ensure quality and governance of design outputs; support checks and sign-off in line with standards; develop QA procedures.
• Interface with clients, DNOs and Tier 1 contractors; support bids and early technical discussions; contribute to in-house capability.
• Support onboarding and development of future electrical design staff; promote in-house capability over third-party reliance.

Key requirements

• Degree qualified in Electrical Engineering or similar; Chartered status (CEng, IEng or equivalent) or demonstrable competence.
• Significant HV design experience, particularly substations and related infrastructure.
• Capability in either Primary design or Protection and Control design leadership.
• Experience with DNOs, Tier 1 contractors, and consultancies; experience with regulated environments.
• Experience producing and approving electrical outputs; involved in bids, tenders, and early discussions; coordinating multidisciplinary inputs.
