Overview

As Lead Policy Engineer, you will develop and maintain SHES policies for Asset Operations across the electricity transmission network. You’ll translate laws and standards into practical guidance for frontline teams and work with engineers, safety specialists and leaders to ensure safe, compliant operations. You will drive policy improvements, support training, and coordinate across stakeholders to embed policy throughout the organization. This role offers the opportunity to shape how safety, compliance and risk are managed at scale in critical infrastructure.

Responsibilities

  • Lead development, review and implementation of policies and procedures for Asset Operations
  • Translate legislation and regulatory requirements into practical guidance for operational teams
  • Provide expert SHES advice to engineers, operations and leaders
  • Ensure ongoing compliance with legislation, standards and National Grid requirements
  • Collaborate with stakeholders across Asset Operations, Safety, Assurance, Legal, Asset Management and Procurement
  • Brief senior management on policy developments, risks and implementation
  • Develop and deliver training and communications to embed policies
  • Review audit findings and incidents to update policies, driving lessons learned
  • Chair working groups and engage stakeholders to drive policy framework improvements
  • Support a safe, compliant and resilient operating environment for substations and transmission assets

Key requirements

  • Strong engineering, operational or technical background in safety-critical infrastructure
  • Experience developing or applying operational procedures, standards or policies
  • Sound understanding of UK health and safety legislation in operational settings
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management to influence across levels
  • Ability to translate technical or regulatory requirements into practical guidance
  • Balancing compliance with safe, efficient on-site delivery
