Overview

As a Principal/Associate Mechanical Engineer in WSP’s Stations team, you will lead mechanical building services design for railway stations and railway buildings worldwide, delivering sustainable, low-carbon solutions. You’ll supervise design work, mentor colleagues, and engage with clients to realise large-scale rail projects. The role combines technical delivery with work winning and knowledge sharing within a global, collaborative culture. Your impact spans concept to handover, advancing net-zero goals and shaping landmark infrastructure.

Responsibilities

  • Produce and supervise high-quality building designs for railway facilities
  • Deliver sustainable, low-carbon solutions aligned with net-zero ambitions
  • Mentor and supervise junior engineers and share knowledge across the global practice
  • Interpret client specifications to translate requirements into designs
  • Design pipework (heating, cooling, hot/cold water) and ventilation systems
  • Select plant/equipment (AHUs, fans, pumps, boilers, chillers, ductwork, etc.)
  • Ensure compliance with Building Regulations, Part L, and other MEP standards
  • Contribute from concept through handover on major rail station projects
  • Engage with clients and support work-winning initiatives
  • Collaborate within a multi-disciplinary, cross-functional team across UK and international locations

Key requirements

  • Mechanical building services design experience in the Rail environment
  • Chartership status with a UK Engineering Institution
  • Understanding of Network Rail and/or London Underground standards
  • Knowledge of controls/BMS for mechanical systems
  • Experience in design of above-ground plumbing, waste, rainwater disposal, and drainage systems
  • Team leadership and mentoring
  • Client engagement and stakeholder communication
  • Collaboration in cross-functional teams
  • Heating, cooling, hot and cold water systems
  • Ventilation system design
  • Plant and equipment selection (AHUs, fans, pumps, boilers, chillers)
