Automation Engineer

Overview

In this role you join agile sprint squads to help deliver high-quality software for Hastings Direct’s digital insurance platform. You’ll participate in sprint ceremonies, craft clear acceptance criteria, and ensure work items align with the team’s definition of ready and done. You will collaborate across disciplines to drive testability and automate validation, shaping the quality of features that enhance customer engagement. This is a hands-on role in a fast-paced, data-driven CIO-led transformation with a strong culture of collaboration and continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

• Participate in sprint ceremonies (stand-ups, planning, retrospectives, 3-amigos, backlog elaboration)
• Capture and refine user stories to meet the definition of ready
• Ensure work items meet definition of ready and done, calling out gaps when needed
• Write Acceptance Criteria describing business rules for functional and nonfunctional behaviors
• Collaborate to create test scenarios and scenarios-based automation
• Contribute to backlog management in Jira or Octane and track work items
• Develop and maintain automated tests with Selenium, Playwright/Cypress and API testing (SoapUI, Postman)
• Write automated tests using Cucumber with declarative Gherkin for business rules
• Collaborate on coding automated tests in Java, JavaScript, TypeScript or C#
• Utilize version control with GitHub and participate in test case management in Octane or X-Ray

Key requirements

• Agile sprint team experience (Scrum, Kanban, Safe)
• Active participation in stand-ups, planning, retrospectives, backlog elaboration
• Experience with Jira or Octane for backlog management
• Test case management in Octane or X-Ray
• Proficiency writing acceptance criteria with Gherkin for automated tests (Cucumber)
• Coding skills for automated tests (Java, JavaScript, TypeScript, or C#)
• UI automation with Selenium, Selenium Grid, Playwright or Cypress
• API testing via code or tools (SoapUI, Postman)
• GitHub for source control
• Excellent collaboration across disciplines
