Senior/Principal/Associate Civil/Structural Engineer

Overview

In this role you drive technical leadership and design management for Transmission & Distribution civil and structural work, shaping the UK T&D capability and major projects. You will act as a technical authority, mentor engineers, and contribute to client and market activities. The position blends design delivery with training and commercial support, offering influence over strategy and service growth. You will work within Ramboll’s collaborative culture to deliver safe, compliant, and efficient infrastructure solutions.

Responsibilities

• Act as Design Manager / Lead Engineer for T&D civil and structural projects
• Lead design delivery for substations, overhead line foundations, cable routes, and related T&D infrastructure
• Ensure compliance with UK standards (Eurocodes, BS EN), National Grid/DNO specs, and CDM/H&S requirements
• Review, approve, and mentor designs by junior engineers; manage design risk, technical assurance, and value engineering
• Lead training strategy for civil/structural engineers; deliver technical and standards training
• Mentor graduate and mid-level engineers
• Attend client, bid, and marketing meetings as senior technical representative; support bid strategy, scope, technical proposals, and cost/programme input
• Build long-term relationships with DNOs, National Grid, ICPs, and EPC contractors
• Provide technical input to project planning, resourcing, risk management, and development of the T&D service offering
• Support innovation, digital engineering, and design efficiency initiatives

Key requirements

• Degree (BEng/MEng) in Civil or Structural Engineering
• Chartered Engineer status (CEng/MICE or MIStructE)
• 10+ years’ experience in civil & structural engineering with strong T&D exposure
• Proven experience in Transmission & Distribution infrastructure, including substations and power networks
• Experience with National Grid and UK Power Networks, SSEN, SPEN, WPD, etc.
• Experience in framework delivery environments
• Demonstrable experience as Lead Engineer, Design Manager, or Technical Authority
• Strong knowledge of UK design standards and Eurocodes; CDM Regulations
• Confident client-facing communicator

• Full UK driving licence
