Overview
In this role you lead technical assessments of rail structures within a cross‑functional team, ensuring safety and compliance with company and Network Rail standards. You will provide on-site leadership, mentor junior staff, and drive high-quality design and assessment work. The position offers exposure to diverse structures and a path toward senior technical and leadership responsibilities. You will work hybrid, with regular in‑office collaboration to deliver projects on time and within budget, contributing to Amey’s railway engineering mission.

Responsibilities
- Prepare and check technical assessment/remits, calculations, reports and drawings to client standards
- Lead on-site inspections and technical leadership during asset examinations
- Maintain high technical standards aligned with project specs and Amey IMS/HSEQ requirements
- Apply industry best practices and engineering judgement within a team environment
- Supervise and mentor junior staff in drawings, reports, and calculations
- Support training, mentoring, and development of staff toward professional qualifications
- Engage with clients and third parties to maintain strong working relationships
- Ensure CDM, health, safety and environmental compliance within CAFA structures assessments
- Contribute to cost estimation and delivery of commissions to programme, budget and client requirements
Key requirements
- Bachelors or master’s degree in civil engineering or related subject
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) or Incorporated Engineer (IEng) or actively working towards
- Thorough experience with design/analysis software (e.g., Superstress, Lusas, Tedds, Masterseries, STAAD, Archie‑M, Ring)
- Extensive railway structure inspection, assessment and design experience
- Strong knowledge of construction materials including historical materials (cast iron, wrought iron)
- Proven track record in mentoring staff toward qualifications
- Knowledge of health, safety, environmental and sustainability legislation
- Experience with Network Rail Routes, Local Authorities, and Principal Contractors
- Experience delivering designs/assessments to Highways England and Network Rail standards
