Overview

In this Electrical Design Engineer role you will modernise electrical design processes and drive innovative solutions for automated equipment. You will collaborate with mechanical, software, production, and commissioning teams across the full project lifecycle. The position supports in-house manufacturing capability and contributes to Royal Mail’s engineering transformation and net zero goals. You will deliver reliable, cost-efficient electrical designs that meet safety and regulatory standards. This is a hands-on, impact-focused role with opportunities to shape scalable industrial automation.

Responsibilities

  • Design electrical systems for industrial machinery and automated equipment
  • Create complete electrical design documentation
  • Design electrical control panels and cabinets per standards (IEC, BS EN, machinery regs)
  • Create and maintain BOMs for electrical components
  • Select components including PLCs, HMIs, drives, power supplies, safety devices, sensors
  • Provide technical support during panel assembly and machine build
  • Resolve design issues and implement changes during production
  • Continuously optimise designs for reliability, performance, manufacturability, serviceability, and cost
  • Ensure compliance with electrical safety standards and engineering practices
  • Prepare and maintain technical documentation throughout the project lifecycle
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver on time and within budget

Key requirements

  • Level 4 NVQ in Electrical Engineering or equivalent
  • Experience in detailed product design in an automated environment
  • Strong engineering problem-solving ability
  • Proficient in CAD/CAM software and design packages (Autodesk, Eplan)
  • Track record of meeting development deadlines and quality targets
  • Experience delivering improvements in challenging environments
