Senior Streets Design Engineer

Overview

In this role you will lead the design and delivery of Camden’s highway, traffic and public realm schemes, integrating safety, accessibility and sustainability. You will work with the Highways Engineering Service and partners across the council, TfL and developers to shape streets and public spaces. From feasibility to detailed design, you’ll produce drawings, drainage and cost documents, and oversee consultants and budgets. You’ll mentor junior staff and promote best practice while ensuring compliance with legislation and standards. This role offers impact on walking, cycling, air quality, and urban regeneration within Camden.

Responsibilities

• Lead and contribute to highway, traffic and public realm schemes
• Take schemes from feasibility through detailed design
• Produce and review construction drawings, geometric and drainage designs, Bills of Quantities, cost estimates, audit documentation and contract documents
• Ensure designs meet legislation and technical standards and identify safer, more sustainable solutions
• Collaborate with Council colleagues, TfL, developers, emergency services, elected Members, consultants, and public
• Manage external consultants and provide technical advice; support negotiations for development proposals
• Experience with Section 106 and developer-funded schemes; review planning designs and coordinate approvals
• Mentor junior colleagues and support apprentices and placements

Key requirements

• Engineering degree or equivalent or Chartered/Incorporated status with relevant experience
• Strong understanding of highway design in urban environments
• Experience delivering large, complex or high-value schemes
• Budget and programme management skills; ability to commission and manage consultants
• Experience in partnership working and public consultation with diverse stakeholders
• Proficient in AutoCAD; able to produce/review complex highway designs; high standard of technical judgement
• Excellent communication, negotiation and problem-solving skills
