Mechanical Building Services Design Engineer

Overview

As a Mechanical Design Engineer in our Birmingham team, you will deliver efficient building services solutions across heating, ventilation, cooling, and domestic systems. You’ll work on diverse projects within a supportive, development-focused environment and engage with cross-functional teams to meet regulatory and low-carbon targets. This role offers hands-on design, analysis, and commissioning activities and a clear path for progression. You’ll help shape sustainable buildings with modern design practices.

Responsibilities

• Create 2D and 3D CAD layouts and visuals
• Design mechanical building services systems (heating, ventilation, cooling, domestic)
• Support building environmental modelling using standard software
• Perform dynamic thermal simulations and overheating assessments
• Complete Part L calculations for regulatory compliance
• Prepare utility applications and design documentation
• Review low-carbon design solutions and performance specs
• Assist with technical submissions and commissioning plans
• Collaborate with installation teams and subcontractors
• Provide ongoing technical support through project lifecycle
• Review designs for accuracy and compliance
• Contribute to commissioning activities and plans
• Produce detailed CAD drawings and technical documentation

Key requirements

• Experience in building services design within consultancy or contracting environments
• Strong understanding of mechanical building services principles
• Proficiency in relevant CAD/design software
• Good communication and interpersonal skills
• Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving abilities
• Qualification: HNC/HND/degree in related field
• Ability to work independently and in a team
