Overview
In this role you will lead the design and delivery of water and wastewater infrastructure, working within the Engineering Design Team to produce compliant, innovative solutions. You’ll collaborate with principal engineers and cross-functional teams to integrate civil designs across projects, ensuring quality and regulatory compliance. You will engage in design reviews, reports, and drawings, while mentoring graduates and coordinating with clients and suppliers. This opportunity lets you shape practical engineering outcomes within a Tier 1 contractor environment.
Responsibilities
- Deliver civil designs for water and wastewater projects in line with project requirements and standards
- Produce and review calculations, technical reports, specifications, drawings, and supporting docs
- Support multidisciplinary design activities and cross-discipline integration
- Ensure outputs comply with legislation, BS standards, QA procedures, and best practice
- Provide technical support to procurement, construction, commissioning, and site teams
- Contribute to engineering governance, ensuring quality and consistency across deliverables
- Identify opportunities for innovation and continuous improvement
- Attend design reviews, client meetings, progress meetings, and site visits
- Mentor graduate and junior engineers; build strong stakeholder relationships
Key requirements
- Degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline (or equivalent)
- Experience in municipal water and wastewater sector with water utility clients
- Chartered engineer status or working towards chartership
- Experience in contractor/consultancy/design-and-build environments
- Strong knowledge of water and wastewater assets and related civil structures
- Understanding of health and safety legislation, BS standards, and industry regulations
- Experience with QA and H&S management systems
- Ability to produce and review engineering calculations, reports, specs, and design docs
- Experience undertaking hydraulic calculations and assessments
- Knowledge of structural design for water-retaining structures and RC detailing
- Experience liaising with clients and delivering practical engineering solutions
- Experience leading or attending design reviews and site meetings
- Awareness of NEC contracts
- Understanding of design planning, programme management, and resource estimation
- Experience mentoring less experienced engineers
