Overview

In this role you design detailed interaction patterns for digital products, build high‑fidelity prototypes, and extend a unified design system to support scalable, accessible interfaces. You work closely with engineering and UX researchers to validate decisions and ensure WCAG 2.2 compliance. You’ll contribute to shared component libraries and document specs to enable smooth development handoff, shaping user experiences across platforms. Responsibilities

  • Design interaction patterns, component behaviors and interface states for digital products and services
  • Create high-fidelity prototypes to validate interaction logic with users and developers
  • Define micro-interactions, error states, validation patterns and edge cases
  • Contribute to GOV.UK Design System and reusable patterns
  • Collaborate with engineering to ensure accessible implementation of designs
  • Ensure interface designs meet WCAG 2.2 and are responsive
  • Work with UX researchers to refine interactions based on evidence
  • Maintain design system consistency and contribute to shared component libraries
  • Document interaction specifications to support development handoff

Key requirements

  • Expert proficiency in Figma or equivalent design tooling with component and variant management
  • Strong portfolio showing interaction-level design decisions, prototyping and design system work
  • Familiarity with GOV.UK Design System and working within established design systems
  • Working knowledge of HTML5 and CSS/Sass for collaboration with front-end engineers
  • Familiarity with front-end JavaScript frameworks and component-based development
  • Understanding of WCAG 2.2 and practical application in interface design
  • Experience using AI tools to accelerate prototyping or design documentation
  • Strong communication skills to present and justify interaction decisions to diverse audiences
