Overview
As a Senior Highways & Infrastructure Engineer, you will lead the design and delivery of highways, drainage and infrastructure projects across diverse sectors in the UK. You’ll manage concepts through construction, coordinate multidisciplinary teams, and mentor junior staff, delivering sustainable and buildable solutions aligned with client development goals. The role sits within Waterman’s integrated civil engineering team, enabling collaboration across highways, flood risk, environmental and structural disciplines. You’ll shape major development infrastructure and contribute to Waterman’s reputation for complete lifecycle solutions.
Responsibilities
- Technical Delivery: lead design and delivery of highways, drainage, SuDS, earthworks, utilities coordination, public realm; produce and review technical reports, drawings and calculations; ensure compliance with standards (DMRB, Manual for Streets, Local Authority Design Guides, Sewers for Adoption, CIRIA SuDS, NPF) and develop innovative, sustainable solutions
- Project Management: manage multiple projects from feasibility to construction; prepare fee proposals, programmes and resource plans; monitor performance, budgets and profitability; coordinate multidisciplinary design teams; manage risks and opportunities; lead client and stakeholder meetings
- Client & Stakeholder Management: build relationships with clients, Local Authorities, contractors; present technical solutions; negotiate with Highway Authorities and Water Companies; identify repeat business opportunities
- Team Leadership & Mentoring: supervise and mentor graduates and technicians; review junior work; support staff development and recruitment; foster collaborative team culture
- Business Development: assist with fee proposals and tenders; contribute to framework and bid opportunities; expand client relationships and new work streams; represent Waterman at events and meetings
Key requirements
- Degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline
- Typically 5-10 years’ experience in highways and infrastructure engineering consultancy
- Experience delivering residential, commercial and mixed-use development infrastructure
- Experience of highway, drainage and levels design
- Working knowledge of planning and development processes
- Proficiency in AutoCAD; Civil 3D; InfoDrainage or MicroDrainage; Microsoft Office Suite;Experience managing projects and coordinating multidisciplinary teams;Strong written and verbal communication;Ability to manage workload and priorities;Full UK driving licence
