Clinical Research Fellow

Company: University of Leeds
Apply for the Clinical Research Fellow
Location: Leeds
Job Description:

Are you a fully qualified, ambitious and experienced registered (allied) healthcare professional committed to the progression of clinical research and a career in academia? Would you like the opportunity to undertake a PhD? Do you want to receive research training whilst conducting a clinical research project in one of the UK’s leading research-intensive Universities?

The University of Leeds is one of the top 75 universities in the world. We have a truly global community, with more than 39,000 students from 170 different countries and over 9,000 staff of 100 different nationalities. Established in 1904, we have a strong tradition of academic excellence, reflected in first-class student education, along with world-leading research that has a real impact around the globe. This role is generously funded through a grant provided by the Institut la Conference Hippocrate (AICH).

You will support and undertake research focused on quality of life of patients with IDH-mutant glioma and their family carers. IDH-mutant gliomas are primary malignant brain tumours with a relatively favourable prognosis. Clinical insights into the best treatment protocols are fast advancing with new treatment modalities becoming available. These aim to provide good disease control while limiting the odds of late treatment effects which can impact on patients’ quality of life outcomes and cognitive functioning. Most research studies to date have included heterogeneous glioma patient groups (not just those with IDH-mutant glioma) and assessed outcomes only cross-sectionally. It is therefore important that we know more on how to support people diagnosed with IDH-mutant glioma as well as their family carers, in the short- and longer term.

Together with the successful candidate we will identify clinically useful questions to answer through the PhD research. You will lead your own studies in this area, including methods development, and contribute to the work of the research group as a whole.

During your employment you will also work towards a PhD at the University of Leeds. You’ll receive support from your supervisory team, which will be tailored to your background and the focus area of your research. This is an exciting opportunity if you are a nurse, allied health professional, or psychologist, especially if you are aiming to pursue an academic career. You will be a registered healthcare professional with HCPC/NMC/AHCS registration or equivalent (please note: dentists and pharmacists are not eligible for this post).

This Clinical Research Fellow role is a paid position, available for those in NHS Band 6 roles or equivalent

PhD tuition fees are fully funded at the UK (Home) rate. Candidates who are liable for tuition fees above the UK (Home) rate will be responsible for meeting the difference between the UK (Home) and overseas tuition fee rates, unless alternative funding is secured. A budget for consumables and training is available.
