Overview
In this role you will assess and approve fire and safety documentation for new naval ship construction, ensuring compliance with statutory standards and class rules. You will support shipbuilders, designers and naval authorities, guiding during design, construction and vessel lifecycle phases. You will work with cross-functional teams to deliver compliant, safe naval solutions and contribute to ongoing safety improvements. The position sits within LR’s Global Technical Support Office, offering a path to professional growth and impact across the maritime industry. Responsibilities
- Review and appraise fire and safety plans for naval ships per ANEP 77, DEF STAN, IMO SOLAS and class rules
- Provide technical and regulatory guidance to stakeholders during design, construction and lifecycle phases
- Perform appraisals and offer specialist advice for service delivery, R&D and standards compliance
- Undertake project management activities including progress and budget monitoring
- Conduct site visits to shipyards, client sites, labs or production facilities
- Report incidents, near-misses and safety observations and escalate health and safety concerns
Key requirements
- Degree or equivalent in engineering or physical science (or marine qualification) recognised by LR
- Membership of a professional institution and working toward Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status
- UK security clearance or eligibility
- English proficiency suitable for professional work
- Knowledge of Classification/Certification/Verification and familiarity with IACS Rules
- Prior experience in fire and safety matters in naval or technical office environments
- Strong interpersonal, analytical and communication skills
