Overview

In this role you will drive data-driven insights for Shell’s Global Products Freight desk, shaping commercial decisions and improving freight performance. You’ll own market analysis, build analytical tools, and collaborate with traders, business development, finance, and analytics teams. The work offers high visibility and direct commercial impact, with opportunities to advance modelling capabilities and automate data processes. You will help translate market signals into actionable opportunities in a fast-paced, cross-functional environment.

Responsibilities

  • Own and advance market analytics for freight supply/demand, vessel trends, flows, and seasonality; translate data into actionable insights
  • Develop and maintain analytical models (Python and Excel VBA) for forward curves, stress-testing, and regression analysis
  • Produce weekly freight market analyses, including fixtures, tonnage, bunker trends, and competitor activity; integrate refinery economics and arbitrage signals with product flows
  • Lead MI dashboards and automation efforts; ensure data accuracy and storytelling for commercial meetings
  • Collaborate with freight traders and cross-functional teams to evaluate COA structures, time-charter strategies, and new product-freight corridors
  • Manage P&L analytics and variance analysis; maintain up-to-date systems of record; build models explaining earnings drivers across vessels and regions
  • Drive data problem solving by adopting new technologies and data sources to enhance modelling capabilities
  • Engage with brokers, shipowners, and analysts to collect market intelligence and benchmark performance

Key requirements

  • Experience in shipping, freight, energy analytics, or trading support with a track record of independent analytical work
  • Strong analytical capability with maritime/freight or commodities exposure
  • Advanced Excel (including VBA) and Python or equivalent coding proficiency
  • Ability to automate datasets, build structured models, and translate data into insights
  • Solid understanding of maritime market fundamentals (vessel classes, flows, congestion, asset valuation)
  • Experience with external freight analytics tools (e.g., Signal Ocean, Vortexa) beneficial
  • Autonomous work style with ability to prioritise and perform under time pressure
  • Strong communication skills to explain complex analyses to traders and leaders
  • Commercial sense and willingness to challenge thinking with data-backed insights
  • Enterprise mindset; comfortable working across global offices and stakeholders
  • Autonomous and able to prioritise multiple workstreams
