Overview

In this role you will design and deliver drainage and SuDS for highways and major infrastructures, collaborating with cross-functional teams to meet project standards. You’ll translate feasibility into detailed designs, optimize drainage networks, and support client engagement while developing technical and commercial leadership. The opportunity combines varied schemes with a clear path to progression in a collaborative, client‑focused environment. You will help shape resilient drainage solutions for high‑impact projects.

Responsibilities

  • Design highway and surface water drainage systems for new-build, improvements, and major schemes
  • Develop drainage strategies from feasibility through construction
  • Design pipe networks, carrier drains, culverts, and SuDS features
  • Undertake rainfall/runoff calculations and assess design storms
  • Perform hydraulic calculations and network modelling (Causeway Flow and/or InfoDrainage)
  • Assess drainage capacity, surcharge, flooding and exceedance
  • Coordinate drainage with highways, earthworks, structures, utilities, landscaping and environmental requirements
  • Produce accurate models, drawings, calculations, reports and technical submissions
  • Support technical reviews and ensure designs meet standards and project requirements
  • Attend client meetings, workshops and site visits
  • Support junior engineers and share technical knowledge

Key requirements

  • Strong drainage design experience in a consultancy environment
  • Good knowledge of highway drainage and SuDS
  • Experience using Causeway Flow and/or InfoDrainage
  • Competence using Civil 3D
  • Understanding of drainage, highway and water standards (e.g., MoCDHW, SWW, CIRIA)
  • Experience producing drainage calculations, drawings, reports and submissions
  • Strong communication skills and client collaboration
  • Full UK driving licence
  • Ideally working towards IEng or CEng status
