Senior Development Underwriter

Overview

As a Development Underwriter you will build and own a regional broker network in the South West, combining technical underwriting with proactive new business development. You’ll operate with delegated authority on commercial P&C risks for SME and mid-market, while nurturing an existing broker book. The role blends field-based relationship management with close collaboration to expand market share and support growth with a strong central underwriting team. This is a flexible, home-based opportunity that offers autonomy, professional credibility with brokers, and clear career progression as the regional operation scales.

Responsibilities

• Develop new broker relationships across the South West and Scotland, including national and independent brokers
• Underwrite commercial P&C risks within delegated authority for SME and mid-market
• Manage and service existing broker accounts to drive retention and portfolio quality
• Identify and pursue new business opportunities in the South West broker market
• Collaborate with regional and national underwriting teams
• Represent the business with professionalism and technical credibility in market engagement

Key requirements

• Solid experience in commercial P&C underwriting for SME/mid-market
• Established broker contacts in the South West (national and/or independent)
• Background from a composite insurer, MGA, or similar underwriting environment
• Technical capability to underwrite a broad range of commercial P&C risks with autonomy
• Self-motivated, comfortable with home-based, field-facing work
• Strong communication and relationship management skills
• Track record of generating new business, not just managing existing
