Overview
In this role you will lead and shape building physics across a national capability, focusing on high‑quality energy performance and design strategy. You will work with cross‑functional teams to guide early design decisions and ensure technical rigor on complex projects. Your expertise will drive low‑carbon design and dynamic modelling within a collaborative Buildings & Sustainability context. This is an impact role at scale, with UK projects and periodic travel to Plymouth.
Responsibilities
- Support building physics workstreams on complex projects, including thermal, energy, daylight, overheating, natural ventilation, and comfort analysis
- Develop and optimise energy strategies, operational energy assessments (TM54), and low‑carbon design solutions
- Provide expert advice on façade performance, passive design strategies, solar control, and fabric optimisation
- Ensure compliance with UK regulations (Part L, TM52/TM59, EPC) and contribute to BREEAM, WELL, or LEED credits
- Produce high‑quality technical reports and clearly communicate findings to clients and design teams
- Collaborate with MEP, architecture, sustainability, and digital engineering teams to integrate building physics into design solutions
- Influence early‑stage design decisions including massing, orientation, glazing ratios, shading, and ventilation feasibility
- Support the development and adoption of digital modelling workflows and best practices
- Provide technical guidance to graduate and early‑career engineers
- Contribute to internal knowledge sharing, technical workshops, and thought leadership
Key requirements
- Extensive experience in building physics, energy modelling, and performance analysis in a consultancy environment
- Advanced proficiency with IES‑VE (or equivalent) including complex simulation, calibration, and QA
- Strong technical knowledge of passive design, low‑carbon buildings, façade performance, and dynamic environmental behaviour
- Experience delivering multi‑disciplinary projects and presenting technical information clearly to clients and teams
- Effective communication with clients and multidisciplinary teams
- Mentoring or guiding junior engineers
- Collaborative and proactive stakeholder engagement
- IES‑VE (or equivalent) for complex simulations
- Energy modelling and performance analysis
- Façade performance and dynamic environmental behaviour
