As a Senior System Safety & Environmental Engineer, you will lead safety strategy for mission-critical defence programmes and ensure certification and safety compliance across the system lifecycle. You’ll influence design decisions, mentor teams, and drive risk reduction in complex, regulation-heavy environments. This role shapes end-to-end safety assurance from concept to disposal, delivering trusted, safe solutions for customers. Responsibilities

  • Lead S&EM activities within integrated project teams and ensure compliance with the IAS Safety Management System
  • Conduct hazard identification, analysis, and risk assessment; define safety and environmental requirements across performance, design, interfaces and verification
  • Influence multidisciplinary teams with evidence-based safety arguments to sustain S&EM requirements through the lifecycle
  • Champion regulatory compliance and promote best practice across IAS programmes
  • Plan and manage S&EM work packages, estimate engineering effort, produce hazard analyses and safety cases, and assemble assurance evidence for certification

Key requirements

  • Proven experience leading Safety Engineering in complex, highly regulated programmes
  • Expertise in hazard analysis, risk assessment and safety case development with robust assurance evidence
  • Knowledge of safety-critical systems engineering, programmable elements, and assurance methods like SILs and DALs
  • Understanding of safety standards, legislation, and environmental management, including Defence Standard 00-055
  • Whole-life systems engineering capability from concept to in-service operation
  • Chartered Engineer status or professional membership desirable
  • Influencing multidisciplinary teams
  • Strong communication and argumentation for safety cases
