Overview

You will commission and maintain atmospheric science systems on the RRS Sir David Attenborough, focusing on trace gas and aerosol instrumentation, inlet design, and data automation. You will work with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality, long-term observations in challenging polar environments. The role combines hands-on instrumentation with procedures, safety, and shipboard support. This is an opportunity to shape critical atmospheric datasets used by UKRI and BAS in polar science. You will join a mission-driven team advancing climate and atmospheric research at the edge of the globe.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain electronic and electrical systems for scientific and operational use.
  • Support instrumentation on ships and remote polar locations, including mechanical awareness.
  • Provide engineering support and projects to scientific/operational departments and ship users.
  • Collaborate with engineering colleagues to deliver projects professionally.
  • Other duties as appropriate.

Key requirements

  • Experience with atmospheric science instrumentation
  • Field work experience
  • Experience with gas handling systems
  • Troubleshooting instrumentation
  • HNC or higher degree
  • Suitable engineering or scientific mathematical capabilities
  • Proficient in written and spoken English
  • Demonstrable teamwork
  • Willingness to work on ship or in remote polar environment
  • Medical fitness to work in Antarctic conditions
