Overview
In this role you will manage commercial activities within Costain’s CSO programme for the Northumbrian Water Living Water Enterprise. You’ll help minimise costs, maximise value, and ensure quality and compliance across contracts. You may lead a small commercial team or report to a senior commercial leader, working closely with project and customer teams. The role supports Costain’s mission to deliver intelligent infrastructure solutions and drive efficient, cost-conscious project delivery.
Responsibilities
- Undertake efficient and timely issuance of notices and correspondence
- Identify contractual risks and opportunities with the Contract Leader
- Prepare and agree payment applications and certificates
- Maintain registers of variations, delays, EOTs, and claims
- Implement commercial policies and procedures consistently
- Assist with monthly progress valuations and claims
- Interface with Customer’s commercial and project teams
- Prepare pre-Contract tender negotiations and reports
- Produce monthly cost reports, forecasts and Contract Leader reports
- Review value management and advise on risk management
- Prepare supply chain enquiries, negotiate and finalize contracts
- Plan and implement change management and cost control
- Monitor supply chain procurement plan and benchmarking
- Liaise with site team, supply chain and Customer representatives
- Provide contractual advice to project/site team
- Maintain awareness of current contract types and their implications
- Ensure health, safety and environmental risks are addressed with Contract Leader/Project Manager
- Maintain document control and minute-taking practices
- Draft effective contractual correspondence and enable collaborative solutions
- Demonstrate leadership and motivate a team
- Apply strong analytical and contractual knowledge
- Assert influence when required
- Understand and apply relevant health, safety and environmental regulations
Key requirements
- Significant post-graduate commercial experience in construction with a proven track record
- Strong financial and commercial acumen
- Methodical, practical thinker with a logical approach
- Experience setting up or operating office management and document control systems
- Extensive experience with contractual correspondence, reports, payment certificates, and interim/closeout reports
- Negotiation and teamwork skills with demonstrable leadership ability
- Strong analytical skills and understanding of legal and contractual frameworks
- Knowledge of current construction contracts and health, safety, and environmental regulations
- Ability to provide contractual guidance to project/site teams
