Design Engineer – Aviation / Building Services

Overview

In this role you will support the development and delivery of Building Services designs for aviation projects, aligning with client requirements, safety standards, and industry governance. You will work with the Design Manager and cross-functional teams to produce buildable, compliant solutions and drive coordination across architectural, structural, and specialist designs. The role offers exposure to high-profile aviation environments and opportunities to shape engineering solutions with BIM and digital tools. You will contribute to design governance, documentation, and successful handover to construction and commissioning teams.

Responsibilities

• Support site visits, surveys and technical assessments with the design team
• Develop technical specifications and scopes of work from site inspections and client engagement
• Coordinate with subcontractor design teams to refine and develop designs
• Review subcontractor information for accuracy and quality
• Assist in tendering and delivery with technical documentation and design submissions
• Ensure design procedures and governance are followed across office and site activities
• Maintain design documentation in line with the Business Management System
• Support QA processes, governance frameworks and company standards
• Maintain design governance with CDM Regulations and industry standards
• Interpret client requirements through technical specs and stakeholder engagement
• Develop coordinated building services designs (Electrical, Mechanical, Public Health)
• Produce deliverables (drawings, layouts, schematics, calculations, equipment schedules)
• Collaborate with project teams to ensure buildability, value engineering and compliance
• Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure integrated solutions
• Promote digital engineering tools (BIM) to enhance coordination
• Provide technical support during procurement and supplier engagement
• Contribute to design programmes, management plans and quality deliverables
• Review design deliverables for technical accuracy and programme compliance
• Identify potential Compensation Events and Early Warnings from design activity
• Manage design changes through Change Control to control scope creep
• Support handover of design information to Construction and Commissioning teams
• Provide technical support during installation, testing and commissioning

Key requirements

• Experience in fast-paced, multi-site infrastructure environments; preferably airports or complex building services projects
• Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills with clients, operators and delivery teams
• Ability to work with integrity, discretion and professional judgement
• Highly organized, detail-oriented and collaborative with cross-functional teams
• Experience with design coordination between operations, design, and construction teams
• Understanding of quality assurance processes, governance frameworks and industry standards
• Familiarity with health and safety regulations and CDM requirements
• Experience with BIM or digital engineering tools for design coordination
