Overview
In this role you drive the technical design and leadership of fibre-optic sub-systems, including high-power amplifiers, from concept to early production. You guide a small team within G&H’s Optics and Fibre Optics R&D, collaborating across disciplines and engaging with customers to shape technical direction. You’ll work across TRL3–7, delivering robust prototypes and test plans while aligning with global teams. This is a hands-on, high-impact role in a world-leading photonics company.
Responsibilities
- Provide technical leadership in designing fibre-optic sub-systems, including high-power optical amplifiers
- Lead and manage small project teams to meet scope, schedule and budget
- Collaborate with optical, mechanical and electronic engineers in a multidisciplinary setting
- Prototype build and assembly, including splicing, mechanical/electrical assembly, and opto-electronic testing
- Develop and execute test plans for functional and environmental verification
- Engage with customers to negotiate specs, present results, and steer technical direction
- Build internal networks with G&H’s global technical and commercial teams
- Deliver technical reviews and produce concise management reports
Key requirements
- Degree or PhD/EngD in Engineering or Physics with optics/photonics/fibre-optics focus
- Current or recent experience in optics/photonics industry
- Commercial experience developing fibre-optic or laser products
- Strong knowledge of optical amplifiers (high-power) and photonics
- Hands-on experience building/testing fibre-optic components or modules
- Team leadership or project management experience
- Ability to generate proposals and manage technical and financial aspects of development projects
- Excellent communication skills for presenting to customers and stakeholders
