Overview
As a Design Lead, you will steer engineering design activities across multidisciplinary projects within a leading UK contractor’s Environment unit. You will own design outputs, drive technical excellence, and mentor future Design Leads while collaborating with Delivery, Commercial, and Discipline teams. The role focuses on delivering compliant, value-driven schemes and promoting innovation and digital design. This is a chance to shape major water/environment projects and contribute to Galliford Try’s 2030 vision of integrated design capability.

Responsibilities
- Lead engineering design solutions from inception to completion for multi-disciplinary projects
- Ensure designs meet client specs, operational requirements, and standards
- Promote value engineering and digital design while upholding SHE policies and governance
- Prepare and monitor budgets, programmes, and project reporting
- Line manage multi-disciplinary engineers and mentor future Design Leads
- Coordinate milestone reviews (buildability, HazOp, DSEAR, CDM) with stakeholders
- Report on budgets, utilisation, earned value, and change management
- Identify resource needs and manage team utilisation
Key requirements
- At least 5 years’ experience in contracting or consulting
- Degree in Engineering (or equivalent)
- Working towards Chartered status (desirable)
- Strong knowledge of multi-disciplinary engineering design and the Water industry
- Commercial and contractual awareness
- Effective leadership and management skills
- Strong financial reporting and analytical abilities
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management
- IT proficient with Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint; cost/performance management systems (e.g. Oracle)
