About the role:
justteachers are working in partnership with a welcoming and inclusive primary school in Downham Market who are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Primary ELSA Teaching Assistant to join their team on a full-time, long-term basis from September.
This rewarding opportunity is ideal for an individual who is passionate about supporting children with their emotional wellbeing and helping them overcome barriers to learning. The successful candidate will work closely with pupils who require additional emotional support, providing tailored interventions and promoting positive mental health, resilience, and confidence across the school.

Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver Emotional Literacy Support (ELSA) interventions to pupils on an individual and small group basis.
- Build positive, trusting, and consistent relationships with pupils requiring additional emotional support.
- Support children in developing emotional awareness, self-esteem, resilience, and positive coping strategies.
- Work closely with the SENCO, class teachers, and pastoral team to identify and support pupils’ emotional needs.
- Assist pupils in managing emotions, friendships, anxieties, and behaviour to enable successful engagement with learning.
- Plan, deliver, and evaluate targeted emotional wellbeing sessions in line with pupils’ individual needs.
- Support pupils during classroom activities, transitions, breaktimes, and other less structured parts of the school day where required.
- Promote positive behaviour and model effective emotional regulation strategies.
- Monitor, record, and report on pupil progress, wellbeing, and the impact of interventions.
- Liaise effectively with parents, carers, and external professionals where appropriate.
- Help create a calm, inclusive, and nurturing learning environment that supports positive emotional development.
- Work collaboratively with teaching staff to remove barriers to learning and encourage pupil engagement.
- Promote safeguarding, wellbeing, and the welfare of all pupils at all times.
- Uphold the school’s values and commitment to inclusive education.
Pre-requisites:
- Previous experience working with primary-aged children in a school or educational setting.
- ELSA qualification is desirable; however, candidates with relevant pastoral, SEND, or emotional wellbeing experience are encouraged to apply.
- Experience supporting children with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, anxiety, or additional emotional needs is advantageous.
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
- A calm, patient, and empathetic approach.
- The ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a wider school team.
- Good organisational skills and the ability to maintain accurate records of interventions.
- A genuine passion for supporting children’s emotional wellbeing and personal development.
- A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
- Two recent education-based references.
