Overview
In this role, you will lead hydraulic and water quality flood modelling work within AECOM’s Water team, guiding junior staff and shaping projects for authorities and utilities. You’ll deliver high-quality flood risk assessments, support design of flood alleviation schemes, and contribute to bidding and client engagement. The position sits in a dynamic, collaborative environment focused on transformative water projects across the UK and beyond. You’ll apply advanced modelling to protect communities and infrastructure while developing a broader offering and mentoring teammates.

Responsibilities
- Develop and check hydraulic models using Flood Modeller, TUFLOW, Mike 11/21, HEC-RAS, and ICM for flood alleviation schemes and risk assessments
- Develop and assess water quality models using MIKE, Delft3D, SIMCAT, and/or ICM
- Conceptualise modelling approaches with risk and opportunity assessment
- Conduct hydrological assessments per Flood Estimation Handbook, ReFH2, and WINFAP
- Lead and contribute to tenders, including framework contracts
- Mentor junior staff for professional development
- Build client and cross-disciplinary relationships
- Stay updated on relevant legislation and guidelines affecting services
- Deliver high-quality outputs within project programmes and budgets
- Collaborate with engineers and specialists across river, coastal, surface water, and drainage flood risk management projects
Key requirements
- Significant experience in hydraulic and water quality modelling software (Mike, ICM, SIMCAT, Flood Modeller, TUFLOW)
- Knowledge of Environment Agency requirements for flood risk assessments
- Basic understanding of physico-chemical water quality and regulatory standards for fresh waters
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent
- CIWEM or similar professional qualification (obtained or near to obtaining)
- Experience with scripting (e.g., Python, Anaconda, Ruby) is advantageous
- Self-motivated with ability to work autonomously in a dynamic, deadline-driven team
