Senior Engineer/Principal Engineer – Bridges

Overview

As a Senior/Principal Engineer at WSP you will drive delivery of civil and bridge projects, ensuring quality on time and budget while mentoring junior staff. You will design bridges in the UK and overseas and oversee management, inspection, repair, and feasibility work. You’ll prepare reports, designs, and cost estimates, and supervise CAD technicians. The role sits within a cross‑functional team delivering diverse rail and highway projects for major clients. You will join a culture focused on learning, development, and meaningful, landmark work.

Responsibilities

• Bridge design for UK and overseas projects
• Bridge management and supervision
• Bridge strengthening, repair, inspection, and assessments
• General civil/structural support to other teams
• Feasibility studies and options appraisals
• Preparation of documents, reports, HSE risk assessments, designs, and cost estimates
• Preparation of fee estimates
• Supervision of junior team members and CAD technicians

Key requirements

• Chartered Civil or Structural Engineer (professional status)
• Practical bridge design, maintenance, and assessment experience (sites and design office)
• Project management experience on bridge projects
• Proven design/maintenance/supervision of bridge structures with innovative approach
• Knowledge of DMRB and MCDHW in relation to structural schemes
• Understanding and application of Eurocodes to bridge design
• Experience in design/assessment of steel, reinforced and prestressed concrete bridges
• Experience with grillage, space frame, and finite element analysis tools such as LUSAS, Superstress, and SAM
• Strong communication, client handling, and interpersonal skills
