Senior Civil Design Engineer

Overview

Senior Civil Design Engineer to join our Engineering team delivering complex water and wastewater infrastructure. You will lead civil design activities, coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, and develop practical, sustainable solutions from concept to construction. You’ll tackle design calculations, layouts, and documentation while ensuring safety, regulatory compliance, and whole-life costs. The role offers hybrid working and opportunities to mentor junior engineers and influence major projects for communities and the environment. You will work closely with clients and internal disciplines to drive safe, buildable, and innovative infrastructure.

Responsibilities

• Lead civil design activities and technical work packages in line with standards, budgets and programmes
• Develop civil engineering designs, calculations, layouts, specifications and technical documentation for water and wastewater projects
• Design infrastructure including reinforced concrete structures, buried structures, drainage systems, pipelines, earthworks, highways and site development works
• Produce cost-effective and buildable solutions considering safety, sustainability, constructability and whole-life costs
• Review and assure civil design outputs for compliance with regulatory, company and industry standards
• Coordinate civil design activities with Process, Mechanical, EICA, Structural, Digital and Commissioning teams
• Identify and manage technical risks, design issues and opportunities for optimisation throughout the project lifecycle
• Build relationships with clients, discipline leads, project teams, suppliers and site teams
• Mentor junior engineers, graduates and apprentices, supporting technical development

Key requirements

• Strong experience in civil engineering design within the water, wastewater, utilities or a similarly regulated engineering environment
• Experience producing and reviewing civil calculations, technical reports, specifications, drawings and design documentation
• Ability to develop practical, economic and buildable solutions that consider safety, sustainability, constructability and whole-life cost
• Experience coordinating multidisciplinary design teams and supporting successful project delivery
• Experience leading, checking or mentoring engineers within a civil engineering discipline
• Membership of a relevant professional institution, ideally Chartered or working towards Chartership
• Relevant Civil Engineering degree preferred, or an HND in a related discipline
• Strong communication skills, with the ability to present technical proposals clearly, confidently and commercially
