Overview
As Software Engineering Director for FanDuel’s Customer Product Engineering (CPE), you lead multiple teams responsible for core customer-facing systems such as payments, onboarding, geolocation, and promotions. You set technical direction, drive availability and regulatory compliance, and partner across Product, Compliance, Risk and Ops to shape the roadmap. You’ll guide architects and senior engineers to deliver reliable, scalable solutions on a three-to-five-year horizon. Your leadership shapes an engineering culture focused on customer outcomes, quality, and collaboration.

Responsibilities
- Lead multiple engineering teams within CPE with clear technical vision and delivery accountability.
- Own customer outcomes like registration, verification, deposits, withdrawals, payout speed, and geolocation pass rates.
- Set standards for availability and operational excellence with measurable KPIs and instrumentation.
- Prepare for event-driven peak load with capacity, failover, and degradation testing.
- Minimize impact of third-party failures via redundancy and graceful degradation.
- Treat regulation as an engineering requirement, ensuring auditability and data boundaries from the start.
- Maintain responsible gaming and player integrity to a high product standard.
- Simplify the domain by retiring duplication and reducing coupling to speed changes.
- Define and govern AI usage across the software lifecycle with evidenced benefits.
- Collaborate with Product, Compliance, Risk, Finance and Customer Operations on roadmap; hire and develop leaders; foster domain-level leadership.
- Ensure production readiness with on-call and incident response; drive corrective actions.
- Deliver architecturally sound solutions with build-vs-buy consideration and scalable design.
- Communicate strategic initiatives on a 3–5 year horizon; shape platform evolution and domain architecture.
- Manage budget prudently and identify waste in tooling and vendor services.
- Model FanDuel principles and cultivate a culture of quality, candour and collaboration.
Key requirements
- 10+ years in software with 5+ years leading engineering teams, including other managers.
- Track record delivering high-volume transactional systems in payments or regulated domains.
- Experience with highly available, fault-tolerant systems under peak load and production support.
- Experience integrating with third-party providers (payments, KYC/identity, geolocation) at scale.
- Comfort working in regulated environments with auditability and data boundaries.
- Strong observability and data-driven decision making using KPIs.
- Deep experience in modern backend languages (Java) and cloud infra (AWS), containers and orchestration.
- Hands-on understanding of AI-assisted software development and its appropriate use in regulated contexts.
- Experience defining and implementing software delivery practices and agile methods.
- Experience supporting production systems with on-call and reliability improvements.
- Experience delivering tech solutions with partner development teams (near/offshore or third-party).
- Experience designing consumer-facing software in fast-moving, scrutinised environments.
