Apply for the Mobile Fire Alarm Engineer
Location: London
Job Description:

About the Company

Our client is an established Facilities Maintenance and Building Projects organisation, with a directly employed engineering workforce of 60+ engineers. They deliver hard FM, maintenance, compliance and project services across a diverse commercial and public-sector client base, including retail, hospitality, restaurants and pubs, casinos, cinemas, care homes, hotels, student accommodation, schools and universities.

About the Role

Our client is strengthening its Fire & Life Safety capability with the appointment of an experienced Mobile Fire Alarm Engineer. The role centres on servicing, maintaining, fault-finding, repairing and modifying commercial fire detection and alarm systems — PPM, reactive call-outs, investigation works, small modifications, and occasional panel replacement/commissioning.

They’re looking for a genuine Fire Alarm Engineer with recognised electrical qualifications, not a general electrician with limited fire alarm experience. When fire alarm workload allows, the engineer will also support the wider M&E team with straightforward electrical maintenance (this is a secondary element, not the core role).

Key Responsibilities

  • Planned Preventative Maintenance and reactive fault attendance on conventional and addressable fire alarm systems, within client SLA/KPI requirements
  • Systematic fault finding and diagnostics — panels, loops, zones, circuits, detection devices, sounders, interfaces, power supplies and batteries
  • Repairs, component replacement, and small modifications to existing systems
  • Taking ownership of quoted works: scoping, identifying labour/materials, obtaining supplier pricing, preparing quotations, ordering materials, and returning to complete approved works
  • Panel replacement and commissioning when required (reconnecting field wiring, configuring loops/zones/devices, testing, and completing commissioning documentation)
  • Producing clear, commercially usable technical reports and scopes of work (vague reports like “panel fault, needs replacing” aren’t sufficient)
  • Updating CAFM/client portal systems and completing job sheets via handheld devices
  • Liaising directly with manufacturers and suppliers on parts, compatibility and technical support
  • Working independently across multiple sites, maintaining van stock, and participating in the out-of-hours call-out rota
  • Supporting the wider M&E team with basic electrical works when fire alarm workload allows (lighting repairs, emergency lighting checks, switch/socket replacement, minor wiring repairs)

Fire Alarm Systems Experience

Essential: Conventional and addressable fire alarm systems, control/indicating equipment, detection devices, loop devices, interfaces, power supplies and battery systems.

Desirable: Experience across multiple panel manufacturers (Advanced, Kentec, C-TEC, Morley, Notifier, Gent, Hochiki/Apollo-based systems, Haes or similar) — not all required, but strong fundamentals to move confidently between systems.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential:

  • Proven experience as a Fire Alarm Engineer or similar
  • Strong fault-finding and diagnostic capability across conventional and addressable systems
  • Experience with panel replacement and commissioning
  • Good knowledge of BS 5839
  • Recognised electrical qualification, with 18th Edition Wiring Regulations
  • NVQ Level 3 Electrical or equivalent (preferred)
  • Ability to carry out basic electrical maintenance and repairs
  • Strong written reporting and good commercial awareness (preparing quotations, identifying materials)
  • Good computer literacy (laptops, tablets, CAFM/client portal systems)
  • Full UK driving licence

Desirable:

  • FIA qualifications or equivalent recognised fire alarm training
  • Manufacturer-specific panel training
  • Cause & Effect programming experience
  • Networked fire alarm systems experience
  • Emergency lighting experience
  • IPAF, PASMA, ECS/CSCS
  • Experience across large multi-site commercial estates, or within hospitality, retail, leisure or education environments

Overtime

Time and a half: 17:01-23:59 Mon-Fri, and Saturdays

Double time: 00:00-05:59, Sundays, and Bank Holidays

Call-Out

Approximately 1 week in every 5, supporting out-of-hours emergency attendance.

Package

  • Company van, fuel card, phone, tablet and laptop
  • Uniform and PPE provided
  • Company pension
  • 28 days’ annual leave (including 8 Bank Holidays), plus 1 extra day per full year of service
  • Significant overtime opportunities, enhanced rates
  • Manufacturer and FIA training, Cause & Effect programming, networked systems development
  • Genuine career progression — technical leadership and supervisory routes as the Fire & Life Safety division grows
  • Personal vehicle use: up to 10 miles/day free, 45p/mile thereafter
