Credit Control Team Leader

Location: BedfordHours: 37 hours per week, full-timeSalary: £35,000 – £37,000 DOEContract: Permanent

Are you an experienced Credit Control professional with proven experience managing and developing a small team?

We are looking for a Credit Control Team Leader to join a well-established organisation based in Bedford. This is a key role responsible for overseeing the day-to-day billing and credit control function, while leading and supporting a small finance team.

You will need to be highly organised, confident managing complex accounts and comfortable handling sensitive payment conversations, with a strong focus on accuracy, customer service and developing your team.

Please note: Previous experience managing a small team is essential for this position, and we will only be able to consider applicants who can demonstrate this experience.

About the role:

You will take responsibility for the day-to-day management of the billing and credit control function, ensuring accounts are managed effectively, invoices are accurate and produced on time, and the team delivers a consistent and high-quality service.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Lead, support and develop a small finance team.
  • Oversee the complete billing and credit control cycle.
  • Ensure invoices are accurate and produced within agreed timescales.
  • Manage customer accounts and oversee collection activity.
  • Manage complex account queries and escalations.
  • Support customers experiencing payment difficulties and handle sensitive conversations professionally.
  • Maintain appropriate financial controls and processes.
  • Ensure VAT is handled correctly.
  • Manage Direct Debit collections and associated processes.
  • Build strong relationships with customers and internal stakeholders.
  • Identify opportunities to improve processes and ways of working.

The successful candidate will ideally have:

  • Strong experience within credit control, billing or accounts receivable.
  • Previous experience managing a small team – essential.
  • Experience coaching, supporting and developing team members.
  • Experience managing complex financial processes and controls.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Confidence handling challenging or sensitive payment conversations.
  • A professional and customer-focused approach.

We would be particularly interested in speaking with experienced Credit Control Team Leaders, Accounts Receivable Team Leaders/Managers, Billing Team Leaders or Senior Credit Controllers with proven people-management responsibility.
