Overview

As a Senior or Principal Electrical Building Services Engineer, you will lead design and delivery of electrical systems for infrastructure and Ministry of Justice projects, including prisons and secure facilities. You’ll steer multidisciplinary teams or own project delivery, ensuring technical excellence and client satisfaction. You’ll shape engineering solutions from survey to handover, maintaining regulatory compliance and robust safety standards. This role offers strategic influence on complex public-infrastructure programs and opportunities to mentor others.

Responsibilities

• Lead design of power distribution, lighting, emergency lighting, fire alarms, security systems, standby power, and related infrastructure
• Review and approve calculations, specifications, drawings, and technical reports
• Direct projects from concept through construction, commissioning and handover
• Serve as electrical technical lead or multidisciplinary Design Team Lead as needed
• Coordinate interfaces among electrical, mechanical, structural and architectural disciplines
• Conduct design reviews and provide technical assurance
• Develop practical solutions for new-build, refurbishment and upgrade projects
• Ensure compliance with Building Regulations, British Standards, CDM and related guidance
• Manage project risks, quality, schedules and budgets
• Build relationships with clients, contractors, suppliers and stakeholders
• Present engineering proposals to clients
• Mentor and develop engineers and technicians
• Contribute to bids, framework opportunities and business development
• At Principal level, assist with resource planning, workload allocation and people management

Key requirements

• Degree in Electrical Engineering, Building Services Engineering or related discipline
• Extensive electrical building-services design experience
• Detailed knowledge of power distribution, lighting, fire alarms, security systems and resilient infrastructure
• Experience leading technical delivery within multidisciplinary environments
• Strong knowledge of Building Regulations, British Standards and CDM
• Experience in design reviews, technical assurance and quality management
• Strong commercial, client and stakeholder-management skills
• Working knowledge of AutoCAD, Revit, BIM platforms and electrical calculation software
• Incorporated or Chartered status with CIBSE, the IET or equivalent institutions
• Chartered Engineer status or equivalent (preferred for Principal)
• Security clearance eligibility for Ministry of Justice projects
• Willingness to engage with secure-sector environments
