Senior Lawyer – Contracts and Commercial (Career Grade)

Overview

In this role you will support the Council’s capital projects teams on a high-profile programme of change, delivering complex contracts and commercial work. You will collaborate across directorates to manage procurement, subsidy control, risk, and governance, helping shape major local developments. You’ll work in a supportive Contracts & Commercial team and have opportunities to develop management and leadership capabilities. This position offers flexible/hybrid working and a clear path through grades toward Senior Lawyer, with a meaningful public-service impact.

Responsibilities

• Support capital projects teams on major programmes (e.g., York Station Gateway, York Outer Ring Road, Housing Delivery Programme)
• Handle day-to-day contractual matters and high-value commercial work
• Manage contract law, procurement, and subsidy control issues
• Identify risk and support decision-making and governance processes
• Contribute to development of management and leadership skills within the team
• Collaborate with multiple directorates across the Council
