Company and Role of Principal Project Design Engineer
Vickerstock are working with an established and growing engineering and manufacturing business in the recruitment of a Principal Project Design Engineer for their West Tyrone operation.
This is a senior Engineering appointment sitting above traditional Senior Design Engineer level and would particularly suit an experienced Engineer who wants greater technical and project leadership responsibility without moving away from Engineering.
You will take ownership of significant design projects from initial concept through development, manufacture and testing, while providing technical direction and support to other Engineers involved in their delivery.
The position combines hands-on Engineering with project leadership. You will remain involved in important design decisions and technical problem-solving while coordinating engineering activity, reviewing designs and ensuring projects are delivered effectively.
The products involve complex mechanical and structural design alongside hydraulic, electrical and control systems, providing considerable technical variety.
Key Responsibilities for this Principal Project Design Engineer position
- Take technical ownership of significant engineering and design projects
- Lead projects from concept and development through to manufacture and testing
- Provide technical direction and support to other Design Engineers
- Coordinate engineering activity, priorities and project deliverables
- Review designs, engineering calculations and technical solutions
- Lead new product development and major product improvement projects
- Work closely with Manufacturing to ensure designs are practical and suitable for production
- Support mechanical, structural and hydraulic system integration
- Resolve complex engineering and design issues
- Support design reviews and key technical decisions
- Drive product improvement, value engineering and Continuous Improvement
- Ensure projects meet technical, cost and timescale requirements
Essential Criteria for this Principal Project Design Engineer position
- Significant Mechanical Design Engineering experience within machinery, equipment or a similar manufacturing environment
- Experience technically leading engineering projects and/or other Engineers
- Strong 3D CAD and mechanical design capability
- Experience taking complex products from concept through to manufacture
- Strong understanding of mechanical and structural design
- Good understanding of fabrication, welding and manufacturing processes
- Strong engineering calculations and technical problem-solving capability
- Ability to coordinate projects and provide technical direction to others
A degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics or another relevant Engineering discipline would be particularly relevant.
Experience within heavy machinery, mobile equipment, materials handling, agricultural machinery or other complex manufactured equipment would be particularly attractive.
Experience with hydraulics, FEA, stress analysis or machine control systems would also be advantageous.
We are particularly interested in speaking with Principal Design Engineers, Lead Design Engineers, Lead Project Engineers, Senior Project Design Engineers and experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineers who are already taking responsibility for projects and providing technical direction to other Engineers.
This may also appeal to an Engineering or Design Manager who enjoys the technical side of Engineering and would consider a senior project and technical leadership position.
