Overview
In this Backend Engineer role, you will design, build, and maintain backend services powering Wise’s Direct Debit API and Payin Platform rails. You’ll create scalable RESTful APIs used by millions of customers across web and mobile, and optimize a payment orchestration system that routes payments across providers. The work backs a high-volume, secure money-movement platform with an emphasis on reliability and performance. You will collaborate with product and engineering peers to reduce risk, improve efficiency, and enable new funding use-cases at scale. Responsibilities
- Design, develop, test, and maintain backend services on AWS
- Build and maintain RESTful APIs servicing web and mobile platforms
- Develop and optimize the card pay-in method powering large-scale transactions
- Design and implement PostgreSQL database schemas and optimize SQL queries
- Build and maintain event-driven architecture using Apache Kafka
- Develop and maintain a payment orchestration system routing payments to optimize cost and reliability
- Write automated tests (unit, integration, end-to-end) for financial systems
- Conduct code reviews to ensure quality, security, and standards
- Participate in on-call rotations for Tier 2 production incidents
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver projects and address performance/scalability
Key requirements
- Experience building backend services on cloud infrastructure (AWS)
- Strong RESTful API design and development
- Proficiency with PostgreSQL and SQL optimization
- Experience with event-driven architectures (Apache Kafka)
- Knowledge of payment systems and financial data security
- Ability to design, implement, and operate a payment orchestration system
- Experience with automated testing across unit, integration, and end-to-end levels
- Code reviews and collaboration across product, design, and analytics teams
- On-call experience with production systems
